Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of energy storage systems as a solution to the problem of instability in the electricity service from renewable sources of energy. It summarizes the characteristics of battery energy storage systems (BESS) as a solution to compensate the instability of photovoltaic generation and of pumped storage systems to compensate the instability of electricity production from hydroelectric plants. The comparison between these two systems reveals that pumped storage hydroelectricity (PSH) is a vital pillar of growth in modern energy infrastructure and plays a significant role as a large-scale energy storage technology, representing a significant percentage of the global energy storage capacity, creating electricity generation capabilities, and playing a fundamental role in integrating with the growing global supply of solar and wind energy.
