Excel workbook for the evaluation of a main thermal scheme in the Mariel thermal power plant

Abstract

This paper presents the conception and equations used to create a Microsoft Excel workbook for evaluating the main thermal scheme of block number 6 at the Máximo Gómez Báez thermal power plant, located in Mariel. The workbook contains the equations that solve the mass and energy balances for the block. The results of these calculations were used to determine energy efficiency indicators such as specific fuel consumption, the effective efficiency of the installation, the thermal efficiency of the steam cycle, and the thermal efficiency of the steam generator, using both direct and indirect methods. The WinSteam Excel add-in was used to evaluate the thermodynamic properties of water. The calculations were performed and verified using data corresponding to the design conditions provided by the manufacturers.
